EEMUA 145 Flange: Copper-Nickel Alloy Flange for Offshore Applications

Feb 28, 2025 Fág nóta

EEMUA (the Engineering Equipment and Materials Users Association) is an international non-profit organization established in 1987 to represent industrial equipment and material users, particularly those in high-risk industries such as energy, oil, gas, chemicals, manufacturing, and mining. As an association dedicated to enhancing equipment management and safety, EEMUA assists firms in increasing equipment safety, reliability, and long-term stability through various measures, including developing technical standards, publishing best practice recommendations, and providing professional training.

Flanges and other equipment components on offshore platforms are frequently damaged by seawater as a result of long-term exposure to the marine environment, particularly in seawater containing chlorides, which accelerates the corrosion rate. Copper-nickel alloy (90/10 Cu-Ni) has emerged as a suitable material for critical facilities such as offshore oil and gas platforms and marine oil storage facilities due to its high mechanical strength, resistance to seawater corrosion, and resistance to chloride stress corrosion.

The EEMUA 145 standard specifies a set of criteria for selecting and designing offshore copper-nickel flanges for these specialized application settings.

EEMUA Pub No. 14590/10 copper nickel flanges

According to the provisions of the EEMUA 145 standard, copper-nickel flanges developed and manufactured rigorously in compliance with this standard are suited for extreme environments such as offshore platforms and chemical pipelines, particularly for seawater corrosion protection.

According to the specification, the stub ends and solid flanges in composite flanges are normally made of wrought 90/10 copper-nickel alloy UNS C7060X, while the backing flanges are formed of forged carbon steel material ASTM A105, which is generally normalized.

To comply with EEMUA 145 for the design of flanges for offshore applications, UNS C7060X materials need to withstand the corrosion of chlorides, salt, and moisture in the marine environment. As a result, the biggest advantage of 90/10 copper-nickel alloy is its high corrosion resistance. Its surface can form a passivation film in seawater to prevent further corrosion, which is especially important in offshore facilities like oil and gas production platforms.

EEMUA 145 flange applicable types:

Pressure ratings: 16 bar, 20 bar, Class 150

Size range: covers common sizes such as OD16mm-914mm, supports customized production

Composite flanges are made up of two different materials, typically copper-nickel alloy and carbon steel. Composite flanges are designed to combine the benefits of various materials to improve corrosion resistance and structural strength.

Solid flanges are formed from a single copper-nickel material that has a consistent structure and is resistant to corrosion.
